Royal is a multimedia storytelling project executed with the intent to flip the anthropological gaze toward the ways in which spectators label, interact with and dehumanize Black hair – as well as the impacts these interactions have on Black hair culture. Through the stories of three women in Seattle, Washington, I examine the complex feelings, economic and social sacrifices, and identity changes that micro (and macro)-aggressions related to ethnic hair styles can trigger.
